Hearth and Home: DIY Body Spray Recipes

Okay, so please ignore the smudgey bottle ;)

So, I've had some interest the last few months from people asking how to make an (easy) body spray or perfume for themselves as a lot of people are getting fed up with the amount of added "stuff" in perfumes and body sprays.  TOTALLY understandable.  So, here's my "so easy you'll wonder why you don't have 15 different scents" recipe for body spray :).

DIY Home Made Body Spray Recipe

Ingredients:
  • 1 Spray bottle (8 oz.), preferably colored glass (stops degradation of the ingredients from light)
  • Witch Hazel
  • Distilled Water
  • 10 to 40 Drops of your favorite essential oil
1.  Take spray bottle and fill it up nearly to the top with distilled water.  Add 1 tsp. of Witch Hazel and 10 to 40 drops of your favorite essential oil (or oils).  Shake before each use.

Some suggestions for scents:

"Chai Scent" (do not use when pregnant)
  • 10 Drops Clove Oil
  • 5  Drops Cinnamon/Cassia Oil
  • 5 to 10 Drops Vanilla Oil (or 1/4 Tsp. alcohol based vanilla extract)

"Citrus-y Scent"
  • 10 Drops Lemon Oil
  • 5 Drops Sweet Orange Oil
  • 5 Drops Grapefruit Oil

I'm using a spray with about 25 drops of Grapefruit Essential Oil right now and love it.  It smells like spring to me.

If you don't want to shell out money for essential oils, no worries.  Here's an easy recipe for Vanilla Body Spray that requires no essential oils.

Vanilla (non-essential oil) Body Spray Recipe
  • 8 oz. Spray Bottle
  • Distilled Water
  • Vodka (or alcohol) based Pure Vanilla Extract

Fill Spray bottle almost to top with distilled water.  Add between 1 tsp to 1 TBS vanilla extract to the bottle (the alcohol in it allows for you to skip the Witch Hazel being added).  Shake before each use.

And there you go folks.  Enjoy!

THANK YOU!! I really didn't feel like going out and purchasing the alcohol that most other recipes call for. I never thought of witch hazel, this is awesome!

Why Witch Hazel itthat to blend the oil and water together?

Well, partly. The witch hazel gives you an anti-bacterial agent in the body spray, much like alcohol does in a lot of other recipes, so that the mix doesn't grow things on you. It does act as a bit of an emulsifier, but I'd still shake the spray before you use it since the oil does still float to the top of the mix, especially if you're using not top quality essential oils (which I don't honestly).
